Experience the beauty of a summer sunset and the rise of the glowing “Sturgeon” moon from the top of the Cape St. George Lighthouse during the Sunset and Full Moon Climb on Saturday, August 9, 2025. This special event offers visitors a rare evening opportunity to enjoy sweeping views of St. George Island, the Gulf and Apalachicola Bay under the moonlit sky.
The climb will take place from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with fifteen-minute time slots for groups of up to 12 participants. Time slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis—no advance reservations will be accepted. Tickets must be purchased in the Lighthouse Gift Shop, which will open at 7:30 p.m. on the evening of the event. After purchasing, guests should proceed to the lighthouse to sign up for their preferred time slot with the lighthouse keeper.
Admission is $10.00 per climber for the general public and $7.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. Payment can be made by cash or credit card. All climbers must be at least 40 inches tall, and children must be age 13 or older to access the outside catwalk.
The sunset will occur at 8:25 p.m., followed by the rise of the full “Sturgeon” moon at 8:57 p.m. The August full moon is called the “Sturgeon” moon because sturgeon, large fish common to the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water, are most readily caught in August. Full Moon names are attributable to native American tribes, most notably the Algonquin, who named the moons to mark the changing seasons.
The Cape St. George Light is located in St. George Lighthouse Park in the center of St. George Island, where Island Drive ends at Gulf Beach Drive. Parking is available in the lots on either side of the park.
