Some North American tribes named it the Hungry Moon due to the scarce food sources and hard hunting conditions during mid-winter\, while others named it Bear Moon\, referring to bear cubs being born this time of year. Celtic and Old English names for the February Full Moon are Storm Moon and Ice Moon.

Festival-goers can enjoy a shrimp-lover’s paradise as local chefs serve up their best shrimp dishes\, paired with vibrant entertainment and a festive island atmosphere. \nTickets for the event are $5.00 for ages 13+ and will be available starting January 2\, 2026\, in person at the Lighthouse Gift Shop. Tickets will also be available at the gate on the day of the festival. Children twelve years of age and under are FREE but still require the “purchase” of a free ticket for entry. \nThe SGI ShrimpFest is more than a great day out—it’s also the ONLY fundraiser supporting the St. George Lighthouse Association (SGLA)\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation organized to restore\, preserve\, maintain\, and promote the Cape St. George Lighthouse. As winter finally releases its grip\, the landscape begins to shift toward new growth\, migration\, and warming temperatures. Other names include Frog Moon\, Loon Moon\, Sea Moon\, Growing Moon\, It’s Thundering Moon and Planting Moon.

Other names for this moon are Corn Moon (Algonquin)\, Planting Month (Cherokee)\, Panther Moon (Haida)\, Snake Moon (Catawba) and Joy Moon (Celts).  Across traditions\, the June Moon marks early summer: longer days\, warmer nights\, and the beginning of the main growing season. It’s associated energetically with love\, affection\, celebration\, and community.

The fish was essential for Native American tribes in the area. The label reflects a regional seasonal marker that later became standardized more broadly. Other names for this moon are Corn Moon (Algonquin and Creek)\, Flying Up Moon (Creek)\, Hot Moon (Tunica) and  Dry Moon (Catawba and Celts).

The Harvest Moon is the only Full Moon name determined by the equinox rather than a month. Most years\, it’s in September\, but around every three years\, it falls in October. Before electricity\, it lit the fields for farmers\, giving them more light to gather crops before winter.

DESCRIPTION:The St. George Lighthouse Association will be hosting its 7th Annual SGI Lighthouse Trick-or-Treat Spooktacular on Friday\, October 23rd from 6:30-8:30 pm in SGI Lighthouse Park. This free\, family-friendly event will feature multiple candy stations along the sidewalk and spooky decorations lighting up the park. Guests\, young or old\, are encouraged to wear their favorite costumes and join us for the fun. \nIf you are a local business\, group or resident interested in participating in handing out candy\, please CLICK HERE to sign-up. Booth spots must be reserved online\, in advance. Space is assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis and is very limited. As such\, we recommend you submit a volunteer form as early as possible. \nThe St. George Lighthouse Association is a nonprofit organization and continues to fulfill its mission through the support of our community\, visitors\, and lighthouse association members. While donations are not required\, they are graciously accepted. We hope you will all join us for this family fun event. It is sure to be Spooktacular!

Other names for the October Moon Falling Leaves Moon (Ojibwe)\, Drying Rice Moon (Creek)\, Migrating Moon (Creek) and Seed Fall Moon (Celts).

Native Americans also called it the Frost Moon and Freezing Moon. The energy of this moon aligns with completion\, persistence\, culmination\, and security.

DESCRIPTION:The St. George Lighthouse Association is thrilled to announce the upcoming 6th Annual SGI ShrimpFest\, a celebration of succulent shrimp dishes\, vibrant music\, unique shopping\, and a festive atmosphere that promises a wonderful experience for all. \nThis year’s festival will take place on Saturday\, February 13th\, from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm in the western parking area adjacent to Lighthouse Park. This one-day outdoor event will be a shrimp-lover’s paradise\, as we bring together local culinary talents to share their mouthwatering shrimp delicacies. Our array of shrimp dishes promises to tantalize your taste buds. \nAdding to the festivities\, there will be a curated group of arts and crafts vendors showcasing unique products\, local nonprofit exhibitors\, a beer and wine station and live music. \nTickets for the event are $5.00 for ages 13+ and will be available starting January 2\, 2027\, in person at the Lighthouse Gift Shop. Tickets will also be available at the gate on the day of the festival. Children twelve years of age and under are FREE but still require the “purchase” of a free ticket for entry. Grab your tickets\, mark your calendar\, and prepare for a day of fun. Whether you’re a seafood enthusiast\, a music lover\, or simply looking for a day of family fun on St. George Island\, the SGI ShrimpFest has something for everyone. \nThe SGI Shrimp Festival\, partially funded by the Franklin County TDC\, is a fundraiser for the St. George Lighthouse Association (SGLA).  The SGLA is a 501c3 non-profit Florida corporation organized to preserve\, maintain\, and promote the Cape St. George Lighthouse. Funds raised are vital for the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the Lighthouse\, the Keeper’s House Museum\, and Lighthouse Park.
